Three weeks ago a major news outlet reported that DOJ Special Counsel Jack Smith was about to start making key charging decisions in his Donald Trump probe, possibly within weeks. One week ago, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis told the court that charging decisions in her Donald Trump probe were “imminent.”

And here we are. If you’re trying to figure out precisely when Donald Trump will be criminally indicted in either jurisdiction, it all comes down to how many weeks Smith was talking about, and Willis’ personal definition of “imminent.” And that amounts to guesswork for anyone on the outside.

But we do know this. Jack Smith hasn’t put much out there publicly since taking the job. He’s mostly let his subpoenas and such do the talking. So it’s hard to imagine that he or his people would have tipped off Bloomberg about charging decisions coming within “weeks” unless that meant just a few weeks. And it’s just as hard to imagine a District Attorney like Fani Willis asking the courts to delay the release of a report because indictments were “imminent” unless they really are imminent.

So at long last we can finally say that both indictments against Donald Trump are likely coming sooner rather than later. But even as we head into the new week today, we’re still waiting to see if this is going to be the week. As annoying as it is for all of us to sit back and wait for the unknown indictment date(s) to arrive, just imagine how Trump must be feeling. He is, after all, the one who’s waiting to find out just how poorly the rest of his life is going to play out.
