We interrupt Charlie Carver and Zachary Quinto in the midst of a private conversation.

Such is the way of junket interviews in the socially-distanced era. Carver and Quinto have a marvelous rapport one another, courtesy of appearing in The Boys in the Band during the play’s 50th-anniversary revival in 2018. Now the pair get to reprise their roles in the new Netflix film version.

The Boys in the Band takes place in a single evening in 1968. The effete Michael (Jim Parsons) throws a party in his apartment celebrating the birthday of Harold (Quinto), his longtime friend and sometime rival. A group of their close gay friends attends, including Cowboy (Carver), a male prostitute rented for Harold as a “gift.” Over the course of the evening, tempers flare and secrets surface as the alcohol-fueled party rages out of control.

The Boys in the Band–the first ever movie with an all-gay male cast–lands on Netflix September 30. We chatted with Carver & Quinto about their characters and the transition from stage to screen.
