Telegramgate, also known as Chatgate or RickyLeaks,[6][7] is an ongoing political scandal involving Ricardo Rosselló, the Governor of Puerto Rico, which began on July 8, 2019, with the leaking of hundreds of pages of a group chat on the messaging application Telegram between Rosselló and past and current members of his staff. The messages were considered vulgar, racist, and homophobic toward several individuals and groups, and discussed how they would use the media to target potential political opponents. The leak came in the midst of allegations by former Secretary of Treasury of Puerto Rico, Raúl Maldonado Gautier, that his department boasted an “institutional mafia” that Rosselló was involved in. The leaks came a year after a previous scandal, dubbed WhatsApp Gate, involving other members of Rosselló’s cabinet.[8]
Mass protests arose, reaching up to 500,000 people at a single event on July 17.[9] On July 22, 2019, up to a million protesters[10] shut down the Expreso Las Américas, an 11-lane highway.[11][12][13]While several of his staff have resigned in the wake,[13] Rosselló initially refused to resign as governor and simply resigned as president of the governing pro-statehood New Progressive Party on July 21 and said he would not seek re-election in the 2020 Puerto Rico gubernatorial election. By July 22, there had been eleven consecutive days of protests, near La Fortaleza, the Governor’s mansion in San Juan.[14] On July 24, 2019, Rosselló announced that he will resign as governor on August 2, 2019.[11][13]

Jeff McNeil’s incredible grab opened up a world of possibilities

The Chicago White Sox over the MLB All-Star break extended netting all the way to the foul poles at U.S. Cellular Field, the first MLB team to fully extend nets to protect fans in foul territory.

Aside from fewer fans getting hit by projectiles launched at 90-plus mph, nets provide a benefit we weren’t expecting. Namely, this gorgeous catch by Mets outfielder Jeff McNeil.

Seeing McNeil bounce back onto the field after his jump into the net, Mets broadcaster Ron Darling summed it up perfectly: “You can kind of use the netting like you’re Spider-Man.”

That got us thinking, what are the best potential catches we could see involving netting. Things to consider here are the importance and difficulty of the catch, as well as the style. Namely, how cool does it look. Here are the best possible net catches*, ranked:

7) The butterfly

We can debate whether or not butterfly catching is a sport. But I think Michael Phelps would have been great at it.

6) Running up the wall/net

What if, like Darling said, you could use the netting like Spider-Man? Now, imagine if the phenomenon that was Bo Jackson using his skills with a net involved. Like the time he ran up the wall in 1990 thanks to his momentum after making a catch.

This catch isn’t higher only because the catch was made without benefit of the wall, or, in our fantasy world, a net. But damn, I really want to see simply run as high as he possibly can up a net. I bet he gets really high.

5) Planting the foot

The badass factor is high with this catch, especially with the outfielder planting his foot on the top of the wall to steady himself before the catch. Now, just imagine that but planting the foot on a net.

4) The twirl

This is better version of the Jackson play, combining the elements of climbing the wall with simultaneously making the catch. Masato Akamatsu scaling the wall then twisting around in one fluid motion is incredible, and something one could easily duplicate climbing a net.

3) The pose

Imagine a catch against the nets, but then somehow having the wherewithal to remain in the netting somehow. It would look cool as hell, and if you don’t believe me just ask Andrade:

2) The original

Jeff McNeil gave us our first taste of this brave new world of jumping into nets with abandon, and for that he gets ranked quite highly. Here’s a different angle for your viewing pleasure.

1) The Hail Mary

I switched sports on you! But trust me, it’s worth it. In the Arena Football League in 2014, the Cleveland Gladiators trailed the Spokane Shock, 50-46, in the final seconds, and if you’re not already intrigued by the team names, I have something else for you. Cleveland pulled this out thanks to a Hail Mary pass, but what made this incredible was the pass ricocheted off the net before getting caught for a game-winning touchdown.

The final verdict is net catches are cool as hell. Give us more of them.

*Unranked: a fan getting hit in the face because there was no net.

Hall of Fame Game: Buffalo Bills v Tennessee Titans

From a 0-0 game to a Kyle Orton comeback to a cancelation, the Hall of Fame Game has had it all.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame Game signals the beginning of the NFL season. After waiting through the spring and the summer, football is back starting with this preseason opener. Despite it being the preseason, there is still enough to look forward to — even watching bad football is good sometimes.

NFL football in August can be rough to watch. Teams obviously don’t go at full speed, the starters hardly see the field, and coaches are trying to avoid showing all of their schemes. This can lead to mostly mundane Hall of Fame Games. Yet every once in a while we are treated to something special.

Let’s take a look at top five most memorable moments in the game’s 57-year history.

5. The Chargers and Packers finish tied 0-0 in 1980

The 1980 matchup pitted the San Diego Chargers against the Green Bay Packers. San Diego was coming off a 12-4 season while the Packers had another losing season under Bart Starr.

The two teams couldn’t seem to get the ball moving for the first 55 and half minutes. However, neither would get the chance to secure the winning score. The game was canceled with 5:29 left due to lightning.

This is the first and only Hall of Fame Game to end 0-0. As it turns out, it wasn’t the only one to be cut short due to lightning. Decades later, the 2003 preseason kickoff between the Packers (again) and the Chiefs was called off early due to weather.

In an ironic twist, this 1980 game featured two teams that ranked in the top 10 in passing yards that regular season. The Packers finished eighth in the league while the Chargers were first in not only yards gained through the air but total offensive yards.

4. Kyle Orton leads a comeback on the last Monday night Hall of Fame Game in 2005

ABC originally broadcasted the game before 2006, when it then moved to NBC. Before the switch, the game was played on a Monday night from 1999-2005. The final Monday night matchup between the Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears did not disappoint.

Miami went up, 17-7, with touchdown drives on either side of halftime. Chicago cut the lead down to four in the third but still had work to do. It was all up to rookie quarterback Kyle Orton to initiate this comeback. Things didn’t get off to a good start for Orton when he entered the game, though. Inside of his own 20, Orton threw a pass right to Jason Glenn and the linebacker took it to the house to give Miami a 24-13 lead.

The Bears quickly went down the field on the next drive, with Orton throwing a 43-yard touchdown. Then Chicago got a massive break with 3:31 left when Dolphins kicker Olindo Mare missed a 34-yard field-goal attempt.

With favorable field position, Chicago marched into Dolphins territory, and a rushing touchdown from Zack Abron gave the Bears the lead.

Miami almost stole this game back. Brock Berlin got the Dolphins to the Bears’ 15 with 51 seconds left. Chicago’s defense held firm in the waning seconds of the game, with Jerrell Pippens picking off Berlin on the very next play to seal the victory.

Watching Orton under center would become a familiar sight for Bears fans that year. He would become the starter for most of the season after Rex Grossman broke his ankle in their next preseason game. That season, Orton led Chicago to an 10-5 record as the starter and a playoff berth.

3. The Titans run an elaborate fake punt for a touchdown in 2009

Special teams usually doesn’t deliver the biggest highlight of a football game — especially during the preseason, when most plays don’t generate any excitement. There are exceptions, however.

In 2009, the Buffalo Bills and the Tennessee Titans met in the Hall of Fame Game. In an effort to honor the 50th season of the AFL, both teams wore throwback jerseys. This meant we got to see Jeff Fisher’s team trot out in bright blue uniforms with the Houston Oilers logo on their helmet, a really nice fit:

Hall of Fame Game: Buffalo Bills v Tennessee Titans

Early on in the first quarter, Tennessee’s offense found itself in a fourth-and-10 situation in Bills territory. The Titans decided to play safe and punt it. Or at least that’s what they wanted Buffalo to believe.

Before the ball was snapped, Titans safety Michael Griffin, who was on the line, moved back and stood in between the gunners and the punter.

Punter A.J. Trapasso received the snap right as Griffin was running behind him. All the Bills players fell for the fake, with Trapasso doing a behind-the-back move with the football. Only two Bills players stayed home on the fake, so Tennessee was easily able to block for Trapasso as he dashed toward the end zone. He cut inside at the 15 and scored on the 40-yard trick play.

2. The Browns and Cowboys go to overtime in 1999

There has only been one overtime game in the history of the Hall of Fame Game. It took place on Aug. 9, 1999 between the Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys. This was a momentous occasion for the Browns, who were playing their first game as a new franchise after the relocation to Baltimore in 1996.

The Cowboys, who were led by quarterback Jason Garrett, started off strong and scored 17 points in the second quarter. They headed into halftime with a three-point lead. Cleveland tied up the game in the third and the two teams continued to battle. The Browns had a chance to win it in the final moments of regulation, but backup Danny Kight’s kick went sailing wide right.

In overtime, the Browns ended up winning thanks to starting kicker Phil Dawson’s 20-yard field goal. It was a nice relief for a sports city which had suffered a heartbreaking loss of their football team just a few years prior.

But as we all know, the joy would be short-lived as the Browns went 2-14 that season.

1. Field conditions forced the game to be canceled in 2016

The Hall of Fame Game has been played in all but three years since 1962. In 1966, the game wasn’t even scheduled, possibly due to the NFL-AFL merger. In 2011, there was no game due to the player lockout. But in 2016, it was called off for a much weirder reason.

The Colts and Packers were all set to play on Sunday, Aug. 7, but it had been raining the days prior to kickoff. It didn’t help the turf’s conditions that Tim McGraw had held a concert on that field two days before the game and the Hall of Fame induction had happened Saturday night.

This made the paint at the center of the field harder to dry. So the NFL decided to try to find a solution. Heaters were used to make it dry faster, and it melted the field turf. The field soon became a cement-like surface, causing player safety issues. Then someone applied a paint thinner which could apparently melt your skin off, turning it from a dangerous to a physically unplayable surface.

By this time, the league had no choice but to cancel. The fans at the stadium found out on social media while waiting for the game to kick off and it caused an uproar. The NFL eventually offered full refunds to anyone who bought a ticket, but the damage had been done.

The whole thing was one giant circus, a series of comical missteps which kept piling one on top of the other. The fact that game had to be canceled due to an error in fixing something as small as paint makes this the No. 1 moment in NFL Hall of Fame Game history.

The Astros were already World Series favorites. Then they added Zack Greinke

A trade deadline deal built for October

Three headlining starting pitchers were dealt before this year’s trade deadline. Two of the three went to fourth-place teams, but the other was swooped up by the Houston Astros, the best team in the American League.

Zack Greinke joins a staff that already includes Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole, which will make them the favorite in just about any October series.

Astros starters already lead MLB in strikeouts (709) and strikeout rate (28.4 percent). They rank fourth in ERA (3.75), sixth in FIP (4.08), and sixth in walk rate (6.9 percent). Greinke has the third-best walk rate in baseball (3.7%) and the fourth-best strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.43), do go with his 2.90 ERA in 23 starts.

Houston’s rotation is a juggernaut.

Wade Miley, with a 3.06 ERA in 22 starts this season, is now the fourth starter in Houston. The Astros starting staff now includes four of the top 13 ERAs in baseball.

The Astros own an eight-game lead in the American League West, on pace for 103 wins after back-to-back 100-plus-win seasons and a championship in 2017. Houston is a World Series favorite, at 3.65/1 odds to win the Fall Classic per Bovada. They have a 99.9-percent chance to make the postseason per both Baseball Prospectus and FanGraphs.

Greinke wasn’t acquired to get the Astros to October, he is on board to help them win in October. Plus, the psychological boost of adding a great player is immense.

“The energy in our room after a thing like that happens is palpable,” manager A.J. Hinch told reporters Wednesday. “You know that what you have in front of you is one of the greatest opportunities to keep the winning ways alive.”

“There was some hooting and hollering,” said Gerrit Cole, Greinke’s new rotation mate.

Anything that spurs hooting and hollering has to be good, right?

The easy comp here for the Greinke acquisition is when Houston nabbed Justin Verlander two years ago. Both are former Cy Young Award winners and likely future Hall of Famers, in their mid-30s when traded to the Astros. Verlander had about $60 million and two more years left on his contract when acquired by Houston, with the Tigers kicking in just over $17 million as part of the deal. Greinke has about $74 million and two more years left on his deal, with the Diamondbacks kicking in $26 million.

Verlander was acquired on Aug. 31, 2017, when teams could still trade players after July 31 though they were subject to waivers. Now, with only a single trade deadline starting in 2019, this time the Astros got their man sooner rather than later.

Verlander is the comp preferred by Astros fans because it led to a World Series win, the first in franchise history. A championship justifies every prior act, and changes the lens with which we view moves that led up to it.

But in reality no move can guarantee a World Series championship. The October landscape is much too treacherous.

What if we look at the Phillies of nearly a decade ago as a comp for the Greinke trade instead? Those Philadelphia teams were juggernauts, too, and after back-to-back World Series appearances and a championship in 2008-09, the Phillies acquired Roy Halladay, at the time the best starter in baseball. They also traded away Cliff Lee, but the Phillies rotation was incredible in 2010, and at the deadline they added another ace in his 30s, Roy Oswalt.

Philadelphia was the clear favorite to win the World Series that year and won 97 games, but lost in the NLCS. Then they added Lee back to the rotation for 2011 and won 102 games, but lost in the first round. Baseball can be cruel sometimes. Even if you are stacked with aces, your season can be royally flushed at any moment.

Greinke certainly makes an already great team better, and the Astros are the clear favorites to win the World Series. But there are no guarantees in baseball.

Porn performer Connor Kline–also known as Brice Banyan, depending on which site he appears on–is dealing with the difficult aftermath of removing a gigantic tattoo across his back.

Kline rose to prominence in part because of the “Born This Way” tattoo. The ink made him easily identifiable and helped him build a large, excited fan base. His career took a much-justified nosedive, however, when he declared he would never have sex with a black man. Because it’s all about the skin pigment, you know.

Now Kline has tweeted images (though his entire account has since been deleted) of his famous tattoo after undergoing laser removal. It didn’t go well.

“Word of advice,” Kline tweeted. “Don’t get a stupid tattoo at 19. Laser removal sucks,” noting the scar which still embosses the design on his back.

Personally, we thought the tat was bold and cool.

Maybe he wishes he would have picked a different song?
