The charges against financier Jeffrey Epstein for sex trafficking are of course one of the biggest stories in the country these days, and Israel and its friends have been an ongoing theme in the case.

Epstein, a 66-year-old former hedge fund manager, supported many Jewish causes and Zionist organizations, and was on the board of the Wexner Foundation, which is devoted to Israel. He had friendships with many Israel supporters, from Alan Dershowitz to Howard Rubenstein to Ehud Barak to Larry Summers. And there is speculation that Epstein, a mysterious international figure, had links to Israeli intelligence.

Dershowitz, Epstein’s former lawyer, says Israel is a factor in the case. Two days ago Dersh published an op-ed for Newsmax aimed at preempting the New Yorker’s anticipated expose of his role in the case (one of Epstein’s victims says that she was compelled to have sex with Dershowitz. He denies the charges, but he has admitted getting a massage at Epstein’s mansion.). Dershowitz says the New Yorker is trying to hurt Netanyahu.

Here is Dershowitz’s blockbuster lead:

I recently learned, from a source close to The New Yorker magazine, that its editor, David Remnick, has commissioned a hit piece against me for the explicit purpose of silencing my defense of President Trump, Prime Minister Netanyahu, and the State of Israel. Remnick despises Trump and Netanyahu, and is well known for his strong anti-Israel bias. Remnick explicitly told people that I must be silenced because mine has been the most persuasive voice in favor of what Remnick feels pose dangers to values he holds dear, and that he will use the credibility of The New Yorker to accomplish this goal.

This doesn’t seem very plausible. Remnick can be very critical of Israel but he is a liberal Zionist. Connie Bruck is said to be the reporter on the case and though she has a pretty good track record (exposing Adelson) she is married to an Israel devotee, former Rep. Mel Levine.

Also, if Netanyahu is so hurt by the case, why is he pushing for an investigation of Epstein in the election campaign, so as to hurt his rival, Ehud Barak?

Epstein’s relationship with Ehud Barak, the former PM who is now trying to stage a comeback in Israel, has become an issue in the Israeli campaign, the New York Times reports. Epstein made what appear to be shadowy investments with Barak.

Ehud Barak, 77, a former prime minister and defense minister, received some $2.3 million in payments from [the Wexner] foundation associated with Mr. Epstein from 2004 to 2006, and Mr. Epstein invested a reported $1 million in a limited partnership established by Mr. Barak in 2015 .  . .

“I never took part in any party or event with women or anything like that,” Mr. Barak said, adding that in Mr. Epstein’s house he had met the heads of leading American universities, philanthropists, Nobel Prize winners, older women from academia, business and law, and political figures from the Clinton, Obama and Trump circles . . .

Mr. Barak does not dispute having received some $2.3 million in three installments from the Wexner Foundation, an Ohio-based nonprofit, and its founder, Leslie H. Wexner, a retail mogul and a former close associate of Mr. Epstein’s and an investor in his financial company.

Mr. Epstein was a trustee of the Wexner Foundation and one of its main donors.

The payments were registered as compensation for research, but Mr. Barak has refused to divulge any details about the research, saying that doing so could harm his future business…

Rabbi Elka Abrahamson, the president of the Wexner Foundation, which provides development training for Jewish volunteer leaders and Israeli public figures, has declined to say what the research payments were for.

One of Epstein’s investments in Barak, in 2015, would seem to have intelligence applications.

Israeli news media has reported that the investment was about $1 million. Mr. Barak’s company, Carbyne, formerly known as Reporty Homeland Security, specializes in emergency response geo-location and live video-streaming…

This brings up the intelligence angle. Federal investigators found an Austrian passport in Epstein’s NY mansion with a fake name and listing an address in Saudi Arabia that Epstein reportedly used to enter four countries, “France, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia.”

The scandal at the heart of the new prosecution is that Epstein served only a year or so in jail on Florida solicitation charges in 2007-2008, even as his lawyers cut a non-prosecution plea deal from the feds on more serious charges. Dershowitz was a lawyer on that team. Former US attorney Alexander Acosta cut that deal, and resigned as Labor Secretary last week when it became an issue.

As the Daily Beast reports, Acosta said he went light on Epstein because of an intelligence connection.

He’d cut the non-prosecution deal with one of Epstein’s attorneys because he had “been told” to back off, that Epstein was above his pay grade. “I was told Epstein ‘belonged to intelligence’ and to leave it alone,” he told his interviewers in the Trump transition, who evidently thought that was a sufficient answer and went ahead and hired Acosta. (The Labor Department had no comment when asked about this.)

The speculation about Epstein’s connections includes the fact that he was associated closely with a woman who allegedly helped bring him girl victims, Ghislaine Maxwell, who (as this news aggregator notes), “is the daughter of Robert Maxwell, the media mogul who died under mysterious circumstances in 1991. Investigative reporter Seymour Hersh alleged in his book The Samson Option: Israel’s Nuclear Arsenal and American Foreign Policy that Maxwell was tied to the Israeli Mossad. Hersh was sued for the allegation, but then received an apology.”

Gabe Sherman mentions Mossad in Vanity Fair:

One theory circulating among prominent Republicans is that Epstein was a Mossad agent. Another is that the George W. Bush White House directed Acosta not to prosecute Epstein to protect Prince Andrew on behalf of the British government, then the U.S.’s closest ally in the Iraq war.

In Epstein’s 2004-2005 address book (published by Gawker) Israel has a listing among several countries (including Switzerland, Italy, France, Kenya, and Brazil). The Israel file includes future-prime-minister Ehud Olmert.

Several Israel supporters are in that address book, including former Murdoch news exec Gary Ginsberg, who wrote speeches for Netanyahu and is on the board of the Genesis Foundation, which gives prizes to Israel’s friends. Also Ron Perelman, a financier and supporter of Israel.

The only thing we can be sure of in this case is that more names are likely to come out, and more speculation about how Epstein became such a wealthy international player when his financial chops were questionable to say the least.

Thanks to David Samel, Donald Johnson, and Adam Horowitz.

Destiny or not, Algeria’s AFCON win came at the perfect time

Algeria refused to be broken by this year’s Africa Cup of Nations final. No matter how much Senegal pressured them, they refused to let themselves be overwhelmed by their biggest game since 1990:

Towards the end of their final, Senegal’s players were frustrated and committing unnecessary fouls. Algeria had been doing that all game, and with time running out and in desperate need of an equalizer, some of Senegal’s players began losing their cool, falling into Algeria’s carefully-laid trap. After one of the fouls, the commentator for my feed sympathised with Senegal’s plight, but, reflecting, sad:

“Maybe it’s destiny as well. Maybe it’s destined to be about Algeria in this competition. To go all the way, undefeated.”

People have a habit of retrospectively forcing their lives, and the world as a whole, into a clean narrative. After an event, we tend to examine it as though it was destined to happen, rather than accepting that most things that happen, happen because of chance, chaos, and luck. Even with the chaotic nature of the world, however, it is still possible to set the stage and lay the groundwork, which makes a preferred event slightly more possible.

What does destiny, in this case, look like for Algeria, who went on to claim the AFCON title for the first time since 1990?

Destiny is going through the entire tournament undefeated. It’s Riyad Mahrez scoring a last-minute winner against Nigeria in the semifinal. It is Kalidou Koulibaly being out of the final for Senegal because he picked up too many yellow cards. It’s his replacement, Salif Sane, blocking a Baghdad Bounedjah shot in the second minute in such a way that it that shot up in the air, and looped over the goalkeeper — who stood immobilized by some mystical power which you might as well call ‘fate’ — as the ball went over him and into the goal.

After that goal, Senegal went on the offensive and stayed there, dominating the game, but no matter how close their battery shots came to the Algerian goal, they never quite came close enough.

The Algerian players, knowing that Senegal were more talented, nicked at their opponents’ heels, crowded out attackers, blocked shots, put their bodies on the line, and frustrated Senegal enough that the favorites couldn’t capitalize on their talent advantage. Senegal attacked and attacked, but the Algerian defense never broke.

A team like Senegal can be better than their opponents, but still lose a final because of a bizarre deflection. And a team like Algeria can get lucky in the first two minutes and defend well enough to win. Afterwards, we can say that Senegal were destined to lose and then say the inverse for Algeria. Fate smiled upon them.

Perhaps destiny understood what an Algerian victory would mean to Algerians everywhere. Before the game, Maher Mezahi wrote an article titled “What does an AFCON final mean to Algeria?” He quotes the manager, Djamel Belmadi, who said:

“For me, the national team and the country are the same…We represent a country with a glorious past, which is even an example for other countries. Our revolution and independence, it’s not something you find anywhere. They are anchored in all of us as Algerians, sometimes even unconsciously. In sport, the notion of sacrifice and solidarity are essential.”

If there’s any avenue that shows the connection between sports, politics, and identity, it’s international football. Within it, all of the power of sport is amplified. So is all of its uselessness.

Algerians have been protesting in the streets since February of this year, refusing to vote for a new President until members of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s cabinet have stepped down. The people are locked in a stalemate with the interim government and the army. The people of Algeria want to have a clean start, a fresh era, and they’re in the streets fighting for it.

This AFCON victory won’t do much to make that fight possible. It can’t force the government officials to step down. But what it can do is provide something like solidarity. Though the title won’t do much in the streets, Algerians can look at their national team, and feel pride in who they are. They know that the players who won that title were representing and fighting for them.

Algeria’s celebrations are legendary. Before their games even start, there are always videos of Algerians crowding in cities around the world and celebrating — celebrating that the team is playing its all, win or lose. And when they win, those celebrations are multiplied by 100. It gets wild. I was in Lyon around a crowd of Algerians when they beat Guinea, and it didn’t take long for the pepper spray to fly in response. Many people are proud and celebrate their team wildly, but none I’ve ever seen like Algerians.

When Algeria were about to face Nigeria in the semifinal, I messaged one of my Algerian friends to tease her about what I thought would be an easy Nigeria victory. I said that Nigeria was the only African country that matters [ed note: Michael Essien is from Ghana, so Zito is obviously wrong]. She replied that Nigerians are too cocky. When I replied, “So are Algerians,” she said, “Algerians are proud. It’s not the same thing.”

After they won, videos started flooding in of Algerians all over the world celebrating. In London. In Paris. In the stadium in Egypt, and of course, in the streets of Algeria. Flares, flags, and, I assume, pepper spray: Algerians were in the streets showing off that pride.

Maybe destiny doesn’t exist, and there’s no real point to talk about who deserved or didn’t deserve to win a game. What is important (and wonderful) about the AFCON final is that while Algerian people are fighting for the future of their country, the team that represents them to the rest of the world went out, fought across the pitch, gave everything they had, and became champions of Africa.

George Nader, a key witness in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, has been indicted on a sex-trafficking charge.

The indictment, filed July 3 and unsealed Friday, alleges Nader imported child pornography and engaged “in sexual acts” with a teenage boy he flew to the U.S. from Europe in 2000.

Nader, 60, pleaded not guilty Friday in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia. A trial date has been set for Sept. 30.

The Lebanese American businessman acted as a connection between President Trump’s circle and Russian and Middle East officials in 2016 and 2017.

Nader helped set up a January 2017 meeting in the Seychelles between Trump associate and Blackwater founder Erik Prince and a Russian official with close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Nader was subpoenaed in January 2018 in Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. He reportedly testified to a grand jury about his interactions with Trump supporters.

He was arrested in June and accused of being in possession of a cellphone containing child pornography when he arrived at the Washington-Dulles International Airport on Jan. 17, 2018, from Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Nader pleaded guilty to a federal pornography charge in 1991 and was sentenced to six months in prison.

Tampa Bay Rays v New York Yankees - Game One

The Yankees manager channeled Earl Weaver with his classic outburst.

Major League Baseball suspended Yankees manager Aaron Boone for one game Friday, meaning he will miss the Bronx Bombers’ series opener against the Rockies. But missing one game is worth it for producing one of the great managerial rants of all-time.

In the first game of a doubleheader Thursday, Boone objected to the strike zone after Brett Gardner was called out on strikes against Rays pitcher Yonny Chrinios.

“My guys are f**king savages in that f**king box, right? And you’re having a piece of sh*t start to this game. I feel bad for you, but f**king get better,” Boone said to home plate umpire Brennan Miller, in his first year calling major league games.

Several forms of “f**king savages” were already being made into T-shirts at that point, but Boone wasn’t done with his tirade.

“That guy’s a good pitcher, but our guys are f**king savages in that box. Our guys are savages in that f**king box,” Boone continued. “Tighten it up right now. Tighten this sh*t up.”

What sold this last part was Boone clapping his hands after each syllable of “Tighten this sh*t up” to really drive home the point. This really was a classic.

In the end we won’t remember that Boone missed a game managing the Yankees. But we will remember his rant for years to come.

The official word from MLB on why Boone was suspended and fined was “for his inappropriate actions, including contact with the home plate umpire.” It was worth it for delivering us such great content.

Making even minimal contact with the umpire is never permitted, but baseball probably also wasn’t thrilled that Boone’s tirade was captured by field microphones. MLB objected when audio leaked from a DodgersMets game in 2016, and umpire Tom Hallion introduced “ass in the jackpot” into the national lexicon.

But getting raw audio is the absolute best. It captures the players, managers, and umpires at their most colorful. It sure beats the watered-down audio we usually get when a player wears a microphone for a nationally televised game, when most interactions feel forced, and are preceded by “I’m wearing a mic today.”

Give us the raw audio, and we get a glimpse into the real game.

Boone’s tirade was reminiscent of classic managerial rants of yore. Images of Lou Piniella kicking dirt, throwing bases, and turning all shades of red immediately came to mind.

But it’s impossible to hear Boone’s umpire-aimed profanity without thinking of the legend Earl Weaver, who once told an umpire, “You are here for one god-damned specific reason: to f**k us!“

The umpire, Bill Haller, had a funny comeback when Weaver reminded Haller of his all-but-certain future Hall of Fame status (Weaver was right; he was inducted into Cooperstown in 1996), shooting back to Weaver, “You’re going to be in the Hall of Fame for what, f**king up the World Series?”

Footage like this brings us closer to the game. The real shame is that a one-game suspension means one less opportunity for Boone to give us audio gold.

Savage.

What kind of basketball does the BIG3 want to be?

Ice Cube’s fledging 3-on-3 league has the talent and the branding, but does it have a coherent style of play?

The BIG3 basketball league knows what it wants to be. As rapper and BIG3 founder Ice Cube said during a weekly conference call with reporters, the league is meant to complement the NBA, filling the time during a summer with no men’s basketball.

But in talking to players and coaches, that identity is not as obvious as the league thinks it should be in its third season.

The BIG3 is made up of former NBA players who are no longer in the league “for whatever reason,” explained Cube, who was quick to note that doesn’t mean the quality of basketball is worse than the NBA’s. The league targets players the NBA thinks are done and whose careers might otherwise be over. The league age minimum is 27, with Perry Jones III, a former Baylor standout and current member of the Enemies, just over that mark as the youngest player in the league.

While player opinions differ on whether the league should be used as an avenue for players to return to the NBA or as a post-NBA career or even both, Hall of Famer Clyde Drexler — who was named the league’s commissioner in March 2018 — emphasized that these are just athletes continuing to to play at a high level. He acknowledged different players use the league for different reasons.

“This is not just old guys playing basketball,” Drexler said. “These are great athletes playing a game suited particularly to their skills.”

As that mix of players returned to Brooklyn, the city in which the league played its first games three years ago, it did so with a game and atmosphere that was still in development.

What may seem like any other basketball game featuring otherwise-retired NBA players and former college stars performing in front of 13,000 people is actually a form of basketball most fans aren’t used to watching. For starters, BIG3 basketball is only played on a half court. If the defensive team gets a rebound, it must go back behind the three-point line, similar to your typical pickup game rules. Each game is played to 50 points, with a win-by-two rule — again, just like a pickup game.

But that’s where the similarities to open gym come to an end. The longer you watch, the more differences you find. Players are allowed to knock down four-pointers if they are standing on three different spots on the court, each 30 feet from the hoop. When a player is fouled, he gets one free throw, worth the number of points that was attempted. Also, there are referees calling fouls like an organized 5-on-5 game.

At times, the BIG3’s brand of basketball appears more like street ball than professional ball. At times, it feels the opposite. That leads to an adjustment period for fans and players alike, even though the league is halfway through its third season.

“We have to learn how to play this style of basketball,” said Bivouac’s C.J. Leslie, a former North Carolina State star and son of WNBA legend Lisa Leslie. “We’ve got guys who are decades in the pros and played in the finals and tough games, but that doesn’t necessarily follow up with this style of the BIG3.“

Bivouac’s coach, two-time NBA All-Star Reggie Theus, said while people think there isn’t a learning curve for new BIG3 players since it’s still basketball, they couldn’t be more wrong. Bivouac — which is one of four expansion teams this season — lost two games because, in his words, they didn’t yet understand “how to win.”

“Coach lets us know, ‘Hey, do this even though that’s not technically the NBA style,’” Leslie admitted.

The league’s unique rules lead to a unique style of play. BIG3 basketball is more physical than the NBA, so referees have to walk a fine line with what they let slide and what calls they make. The “no blood, no foul” mantra of street-ball sometimes reveals itself in BIG3 games, but sometimes they have to blow the whistle.

Those rules were clearly on display in the Barclays Center. As Bivouac and 3 Headed Monsters both neared 50 points in the final game of the day, former Georgia Tech star Will Bynum was fouled while taking a three-pointer. At 47 points, Bynum just needed to drain his four-point free throw to seal the game for Bivouac, which is exactly what he did.

But while BIG3 basketball may often feel like your average game of pickup hoops at the park, the biggest difference comes the pace of play. In a half-court setting with only six players, there’s less defensive help and more on-ball defense. The game is quick on both sides of the ball, and the transition from offense to defense is fast.

As Drexler said, the basketball IQ and experience the players glean from the pros never go away.

“The NBA tells guys at a certain age that you can’t play anymore because you’re too slow, you can’t jump as high, you can’t run as fast as you once could,” said Kenyon Martin, a former NBA All-Star who played in the BIG3 and now coaches Trilogy. “But you don’t forget how to play basketball. Guys are proving that in this league. Guys are playing at a high level.”

In a way, the different rules, players, and style underscores Ice Cube’s emphasis that the BIG3 is meant to complement the NBA, not compete with it. He still believes there is a place for three-on-three basketball at a high level and an appetite for it from players and fans alike.

“We want people to respect the sport and respect the athletes that we have because they are the best three-on-three players in the world,” he said. “We’re a little cocky with it, but we’ve got Joe Johnson, Stephen Jackson, some of the best players that ever laced up. Champions. We feel like this sport can grow. It should, it’s needed. So why not us?”

But just being a complement to the NBA isn’t enough to maintain a brand identity. The next step for the BIG3 to actually grow the sport and create a larger following for three-on-three basketball, then, is to figure out exactly what kind of sport it’s growing.
