July 15 (UPI) — Federal prosecutors said in court Monday investigators found a phony passport, diamonds and valuable artwork inside billionaire Jeffrey Epstein‘s $77 million Manhattan home — a sign, they said, the accused sex trafficker will flee the United States if he’s granted bail.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Alex Rossmiller made the remarks at Epstein’s bail hearing Monday. He said Epstein’s wealth makes him a major flight risk and gives him the ability to possibly tamper with witnesses.

Rossmiller said a search of the home found an expired passport listing Epstein’s country of residence as Saudi Arabia.

Epstein, 66, was arrested earlier this month on charges of sex trafficking of minors and conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking of minors between 2002 and 2005. At Monday’s hearing, U.S. District Judge Richard Berman postponed making a decision about Epstein’s bail until Thursday.

Two women who say they were assaulted by Epstein urged Berman to keep him in jail. Monday was the first time the women faced Epstein in court.

“Your honor, my name is Courtney Wild and I was sexually abused by Jeffrey Epstein at the age of 14,” said one, who accused Epstein of assaulting her in Palm Beach, Fla. “He is a scary person to have walking the street.”

“I was 16 years old when I had the misfortune of meeting Mr. Epstein here in New York,” said the other woman, Alice Farmer. “I want to voice my support (against his release). We know they have found photos of young women in his home.”

Epstein attorney Martin Weinberg said Monday prosecutors have failed to prove his client continued to have illegal relationships with underage girls. Epstein pleaded guilty as part of a 2008 deal in a separate Florida case that accused him of sexual misconduct with a minor — a controversial deal given by former Miami prosecutor Alex Acosta, who resigned last week as President Donald Trump‘s labor secretary.

Weinberg said Epstein is willing to accept a bail amount as high as $100 million and be confined to his New York City mansion.

How alleged sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein got rich is still a mystery.

But perhaps the oddest claim about the source of his fortune, which prosecutors pegged north of $500 million during bail proceedings Monday, may have originated with Epstein himself. Friends say he bragged to them in the 1980s that he was a global bounty hunter for unspecified governments.

Investigators revealed the raid of the accused child sex trafficker’s palatial New York City residence uncovered a now-expired passport issued in the 1980s by a foreign country, with Epstein’s picture but with a different name and a residence listed in Saudi Arabia. Prosecutors said during Epstein’s hearing that the passport was in a locked safe that was also filled with “piles of cash” and “dozens of diamonds.”

Prosecutors last week said they examined bank records that suggest Epstein earns at least $10 million per year. And they suggested that Epstein’s source of wealth remains a mystery to them.

A number of Epstein’s friends from the early 1980s recalled that Epstein used to claim that he was a bounty hunter who sought to retrieve “lost or stolen money” on behalf of clients who included “the government” or “very rich people,” according to a 2003 Vanity Fair article by Vicky Ward. A former senior White House official recounted that outgoing Labor Secretary Alex Acosta said during interviews for the administration position that he had been told during the 2008 case against Epstein that Epstein “belonged to intelligence,” according a July article by Ward for the Daily Beast.

Acosta largely dodged a question about this at his press conference last week but accused journalists of going down “rabbit holes.”

By most accounts, Epstein’s career began with a brief stint as a teacher at the elite New York City prep school the Dalton School in the 1970s, which reportedly ended with his dismissal. But while at Dalton, he made connections that landed him a job at Bear Stearns, where he worked for a number of years before setting out on his own. In 1981, he founded International Assets Group Inc., an advisory firm that he ran out of his apartment. That was followed by the founding of J. Epstein & Co., a money management firm, in the mid-1980s. Epstein claimed in 2003 that he was almost absurdly selective with his clientele, limiting investors to those with $1 billion or more.

Epstein owns a $77 million Manhattan mansion, a massive Palm Beach, Florida, estate, a sprawling ranch and castle-like abode in New Mexico, an expensive apartment in Paris, and a private island in the Caribbean, often dubbed the “Island of Sin” or “Pedophile Island.”

Jesse Kornbluth, an author and former friend of Epstein’s, shed light on Epstein’s 1980s boasts. When contacted by the Washington Examiner, Kornbluth referred to a piece he wrote for Salon where he recalls meeting Epstein in 1986 and says that Epstein presented himself as having a a “double identity” as not just a money manager for rich clients but also as a “high-level bounty hunter.”

“Sometimes, he told me, he worked for governments to recover money looted by African dictators,” Kornbluth wrote. “Other times those dictators hired him to help them hide their stolen money.”

Kornbluth said in the piece he was intrigued by Epstein’s story and that Epstein “was pleased that I was interested in writing about him” and that the prospect of an entire book about Epstein’s exploits “convinced him that I should see a sample of his craft.”

He met Epstein in the lobby of a Park Avenue South office building where Epstein intended on serving a subpoena to a law firm, but that Epstein “didn’t get past the receptionist.”

“I thought this episode… odd. A major financial figure trying to serve a subpoena? Don’t you hire someone to do that? My interest lapsed,” Kornbluth wrote

Epstein’s dramatic claims about recovering loot from foreign dictators and about helping foreign dictators hide loot of their own has never been substantiated.

“I believe that every word that Jeffrey Epstein told me was unverifiable, and fantasy,” Kornbluth told the Washington Examiner.

Their friendship ultimately ended, Kornbluth wrote, in June 1987.

“The night before our marriage, Epstein called. ‘It’s your last free night,’ he told my wife-to-be. ‘Why don’t you come over and fuck me?’” Kornbluth wrote.

Epstein described himself as someone who specialized “in finding missing money” when pitching people on his financial expertise in the 1980s, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Epstein faces charges that he “sexually exploited and abused dozens of minor girls at his homes in Manhattan, New York, and Palm Beach, Florida, among other locations” between 2002 and 2005, according to a 14-page federal indictment. Epstein pleaded not guilty in federal court last Monday.

Acosta, the former U.S. attorney for Southern Florida who reached a controversial nonprosecution agreement with Epstein’s attorneys in 2008, resigned as Labor Department secretary last week. Epstein’s sweetheart deal let him plead guilty to two state-level prostitution solicitation charges related to a 17-year-old girl. Epstein served just 13 months in a Palm Beach County jail with work release, paid restitution to certain victims, and was required to register as a sex offender. The agreement was reportedly struck before investigators had finished interviewing all the alleged victims and was kept secret from some of the victims too.

The only known figure whose money was managed by Epstein is billionaire retailer Les Wexner, the founder and CEO of L Brands, which included Victoria’s Secret and Abercrombie & Fitch, among others. The two men forged a close financial relationship starting in the 1980s, but had a falling out after the allegations about Epstein and underage girls first emerged.

PROBLEM PALS

Ehud Barak: I Visited Epstein’s Island But Never Met Any Girls

In an exclusive interview with The Daily Beast, the Israeli politician fights back at Benjamin Netanyahu’s election attacks and reveals more about his relationship with Epstein.

At these events, Barak says, he “unequivocally” never met any women or girls.

Asked if any compromising pictures of him could yet surface, he responded “there is no chance whatsoever.”

“I never attended a party with him … I never met Epstein in the company of women or young girls.”

Most Israelis first heard of Epstein in January 2016, when the British tabloid The Daily Mail published paparazzi-style pictures taken over an icy weekend stakeout headlined, “The busy life of Jeffrey Epstein: Group of gorgeous Manhattan ‘it’ girls in and out of the billionaire sex offender’s mansion before Clinton pal flies off in private jet with comely brunette.”

Buried in the article was a picture of  Barak captioned “an unidentified man… with his own security detail at Jeffrey Epstein’s New York Mansion.”

Israelis who saw the item laughed at the former prime minister, almost invisible in a large puffy coat and an oversized Russian-style fur hat.

“It is me in the picture,” he acknowledges. “It was so cold the Middle Easterner had to put on a hat. I was there, for lunch or chat, nothing else. So what?”

Barak has taken a humorously magnanimous approach in response to Netanyahu’s online taunts.

“It pains me to hear that people I know are in trouble with the law,” he posted, in one tweet. “First Netanyahu, now Epstein. My wish for them both is that the truth will out. Period.”

In a later tweet, posted after Netanyahu’s Likud party called on the attorney general to open a probe into Barak’s personal and business ties with Epstein, he said, “No need to investigate—I confess. I gave a second chance, both to Jeffrey and to Bibi [Netanyahu’s nickname.] They are now both drowning in criminality.”

Most of the queries into Barak’s ties to Epstein focus on financial dealings that are now coming to light.

“No need to investigate—I confess. I gave a second chance, both to Jeffrey and to Bibi. They are now both drowning in criminality.”

Last year, an Israeli investigative journalist revealed that in 2004 Barak received about $2.4 million earmarked “research” from the Wexner Foundation, an American philanthropy with which Epstein was long associated, that focuses on developing leadership skills among young Israeli and American Jewish citizens deemed to have potential. (Billionaire Les Wexner is Epstein’s only known client.)

Barak says he does not know if Epstein had any connection to the grant or payment he received, and in several past interviews has refused to explain what he was compensated for.

“I did what I committed to do,” he told The Daily Beast, adding that he does recall the details of the contract, but believes he “is not supposed to discuss it.”

“I perform research and geopolitical consulting for a lot of interested parties,” says the former prime minister and decorated former chief of staff of Israel’s army, who is now 77 years old. “It is up to them if they want to discuss it.”

The Wexner Foundation has declined numerous media requests to provide any explanation for the 2004 payment.

Last week, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz revealed that Epstein was a principal investor in Carbyne, a video streaming and geolocation software start-up founded by Barak in 2015. The extent of Epstein’s financial involvement has not been made public, and Barak has since said he is exploring avenues to disassociate himself from Epstein completely.

Ritchie Torres, a 31-year-old gay black Puerto Rican NYC Councilman, announced his bid for the Bronx congressional seat soon to be vacated by Representative José E. Serrano, the longest-serving Hispanic representative.

Torres will run against longtime homophobe and Pentecostal minister Ruben Diaz Sr., another councilman, and several other candidates.

The NYT reports: ‘Mr. Díaz, 76, has made it clear over the decades how he feels about homosexuality. In 1994, he said that the Gay Games coming to New York would help spread AIDS and teach young people that “homosexuality is O.K., that it is not immoral or sinful behavior.” As a state senator, he vocally opposed gay marriage, once holding a rally against the legislation to authorize it as his gay granddaughter held a counter protest across the street.’

Of course the gay writer of that homophobic Pete Buttigieg hit piece says he’s getting death threats

It appears that Dale Peck, the gay writer who authored that homophobic hit piece about Pete Buttigieg published by The New Republic last week, can dish it out. But can he take it?

Quick recap: In the piece, which was published Friday, Peck repeatedly refers to Mayor Pete as “Mary Pete” and “the gay equivalent of Uncle Tom,” fantasizes about his bedroom behaviors and preferred sexual positions, and suggests he shouldn’t be president because he would be too sexually promiscuous, arguing that, because he didn’t come out until his 30s, he would act like a “gay teenager” in the White House.

He concludes his op-ed by saying that he wouldn’t turn down an invitation if asked to sleep with the 2020 hopeful.

A major backlash ensured, prompting the site to take down the post and replace it with an editor’s note that reads: “Dale Peck’s post ‘My Mayor Pete Problem’ has been removed from the site, in response to criticism of the piece’s inappropriate and invasive content. We regret its publication.”

Editor Chris Lehmann and owner and editor-in-chief Win McCormack both put out statements apologizing for the op-ed, calling it “inappropriate,” “invasive,” and “offensive.”

The site was also forced to drop out of a planned “presidential climate summit,” during which 2020 candidates would spend a significant amount of time discussing their plans to combat climate change, it had scheduled to co-host with Gizmodo after sponsors threatened to pull funding.

Now, Peck says he’s receiving death threats.

Yesterday, he tweeted: “Apologies to all the people who sent me legitimate friend requests in the past couple of days. You can probably understand why I don’t want to go through them all to find out who’s real and who just wants to make sure their death threats make it to my inbox.”

Prior to that, as the initial fallout was happening, Peck had tweeted that he was off to the beach to celebrate his birthday. And to get away from all the mean things people were saying about him.

“Oh hello! It’s my birthday! I’m going to the beach and then I’m going out to dinner with some friends, and will (mostly) be leaving the internet to its own devices today. I usually try to respond to all the birthday wishes but my page is a bit of a mess today for some reason, so if I miss your post please don’t take it personally. Wink wink. Wah wah.”

Look, people, what Peck wrote is vile and embarrassing and doesn’t do any favors for LGBTQ people, but there’s no need to stoop to his level by sending him death threats.

As for Buttigieg, he kept it classy when speaking to the Associated Press over the weekend, saying, “I appreciated that [the] article was taken down. I don’t think it really reflects the New Republic that I know.”

When asked, “How do you respond this this question whether you’re gay enough?”, the 2020 hopeful replied, “You know, there’s not gonna be an answer for everybody. The best way I’ve found to deal with that is to just be myself and let other people worry about whether it’s enough.”

EVIL EMPIRE. What Mick Mulvaney’s doing behind the scenes: ‘This account of Mulvaney’s rising power is based on interviews with 32 White House aides, current and former administration officials, lawmakers and legislative staffers, some of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity to be candid….Mulvaney has focused much of his energy on creating a new White House power center revolving around the long-dormant Domestic Policy Council and encompassing broad swaths of the administration. One White House official described Mulvaney as “building an empire for the right wing.”’

LOVE ME TENDER. Baz Luhrmann has cast his Elvis Presley.

HISTORIC. Lil Nas X continues to make history with “Old Town Road”.

NYT. Pete Buttigieg’s life in the closet: “He may have waited far longer than most young gay men today. But ever the overachiever, he made record time in setting a new bar. In less than four years he went from being single and closeted to being married and out as a gay candidate for president.”

BOLSONARO. Brazilian president may nominate son as U.S. ambassador: ‘Eduardo Bolsonaro, who is currently a congressman, met with Foreign Minister Ernesto Araujo on Friday and told reporters that the minister “expressed support” for his nomination.’

WILLIAM DANNEMEYER. Ding dong, the U.S. House’s most notorious anti-gay crusader is dead. ‘Mr. Dannemeyer advocated for new anti-sodomy laws, falsely declared that AIDS patients “emit spores” that can infect pregnant women and followed conspiracy theorist Lyndon H. LaRouche Jr. in calling for AIDS patients to be quarantined. ‘

ACA 2.0? Biden unveils healthcare plan: ‘The plan — which the campaign says will cost $750 billion over a decade, to be paid for by reversing some of the Trump administration’s tax cuts — is less transformative than the “Medicare for All” proposal advanced by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and supported by some other Democrats, which would effectively do away with private insurance and shift all Americans to government-run health care.’

WILL HURD. A Republican congressman finally called Trump racist. “The tweets are racist and xenophobic. They are also inaccurate. … It’s behavior that’s unbecoming of a President of the United States”

IT’S A NO FROM ME. Kim Cattrall on doing another Sex and the City movie.

AUDIO SUNGLASSES. Wearable with shade: “Putting a top-quality audio experience into sunglass frames feels like as seismic a shift as the first era of wireless headphones.”

BOB ROSS. Where are all his paintings of happy little trees?

UNEXPECTED SEA CREATURE OF THE DAY. A huge barrel jellyfish off the coast of Cornwall, UK. “It has got a very mild sting and poses no threat to humans – some people don’t even feel it,” Daly said. “Many people would be immediately worried, but it is not dangerous. Its a majestic creature.”

Megan Rapinoe slams Trump again: “he’s trying to divide so he can conquer”

Women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe continues her run of riling up Trump supporters, this time by sharing what she would tell Trump-supporting soccer fans.

In an interview with Meet The Press, Rapinoe addressed a controversy-filled week without apology for her criticisms of Donald Trump. She also asserted that her elevated celebrity gives her the platform to bring attention to much-neglected issues, like Trump policies on racial equality, equal pay and LGBTQ rights.

When host Chuck Todd pressed her on what she would say to a Trump-supporting fan, Rapinoe didn’t mince words:

I think that I would, you know, try to share our message. Do you, you know, believe that all people are created equal? Do you believe that equal pay should be mandated? Do you believe that everyone should have healthcare? Do you believe that we should treat everyone with respect? I think those are the basics of what we’re talking about. And I understand people feel upset or uncomfortable. There’s I think some feelings of disrespect about the anthem protest or things that I’ve said in the past, but ultimately I think I am here open and honest. I’ve admitted mistakes. I will continue to do that. I will continue to be vulnerable and be honest and be open and want to have that conversation because I think Trump’s message excludes people that look like me and that are me, of course, but it excludes a lot of people in his base as well. And I think that he’s trying to divide so he can conquer, not unite so we can all conquer.

Rapinoe also added that Trump would have to reverse “about 50 policies” before she would consider visiting the White House. Rapinoe’s remarks follow a weeks-long back and forth with Trump himself for declining an invitation to the White House before winning the Women’s World Cup. She then doubled down on her stance after winning, as did several other members of the women’s team. Rapinoe is an out-and-proud gay woman and has landed her harshest criticism for Trump over his policies regarding queer issues, such as his proposed ban on transgender people serving in the armed forces.

Gus giggles

After four years together, Gus Kenworthy and Matt Wilkas announced they were calling it quits last week.

In a statement to People, a rep for the couple said, “Gus and Matt are taking time apart. They love and support each other and remain close friends.”

We were bummed about the news as they were such a cute couple.

Then on Friday, Gus shared a shirtless Instagram snap of himself with another dude. But before you go getting any ideas, you should know the guy is Seth Gottesdiener (a.k.a. Seth G), a personal trainer at Indigo Fitness in Los Angeles.

In his post, Gus thanked Seth for the workout while covering his face with a funny sticker that says “Tap Here.”

Meanwhile, over on Seth’s Instagram page, he shared a few photos and videos from the sweaty gym session.

A source tells Page Six that Gus and Matt, who began dating in 2015, broke up about a week ago, just before the July Fourth holiday.

We’re glad to see the Olympian is taking care of himself and making healthy decisions during what is no doubt a challenging time.
