Trump Biographer Warns of Ties to Epstein | Law & Crime

Michael_Novakhov shared this story from Law & Crime.

The author of a recent biography about the life of Donald Trump on Friday warned on Saturday that the prosecution of Jeffrey Epstein for alleged sex-trafficking crimes could also entangle President Trump, who had close personal ties to Epstein in the 1990’s and early 2000’s.

Epstein was arrested by federal authorities last weekend and charged with sex trafficking and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking.

Journalist Timothy L. O’Brien, an executive editor at Bloomberg and author of the 2005 biographical book, Trumpnation: The Art of Being the Donald, appeared on MSNBC’s “Deadline: Whitehouse” with Nicolle Wallace Saturday to discuss his experience shadowing Donald Trump while writing the book in the mid 2000’s and how some of what he witnessed may play a role as the case against Epstein moves forward.

“When the president stands on the White House lawn and said he barely knew Jeffrey Epstein, that’s not supported by the fact pattern,” O’Brien said Saturday morning.

“They knew each other well from 1987 to at least 200. He traveled on Epstein’s jet at least once,” O’Brien continued, adding, “I spent about two years, a lot of time with Trump in the mid-2000s, and he routinely talked about Jeffrey Epstein as someone he admired, he felt they were in sync.”

O’Brien then went into how Trump’s ties to Epstein had already placed him in legal peril. In a 2016 lawsuit filed against Trump by a woman in her thirties alleging that the President raped her when she was 13 in Epstein’s New York townhouse. Although the victim dropped the suit against Trump after repeatedly receiving death threats, federal investigators will very likely follow up on her allegations in pursuit of the case against Epstein.

“What is happening now with this investigation in the Southern District is they’re going to get access to Jeffrey Epstein’s videos,” O’Brien said.

“The other thing is, there is an outstanding claim, a Jane Doe claim that was filed right before the election by a woman in her 30s who said in the 90s when she was 13, Donald Trump raped her in Jeffrey Epstein’s townhouse in the upper east side. The veracity of that claim can be tested now by the Southern District. They’re investigating what occurred in Jeffrey Epstein’s townhouse.”

In the 2016 lawsuit, Jane Doe claimed she was the victim of a “savage sexual attack” at the hands of Trump in 1994, during which he allegedly “tied [her] to a bed, exposed himself to [her], and then proceeded to forcibly rape [her].”

The lawsuit also includes the account of a corroborating witness, Tiffany Doe, who claimed to have seen the underage victim perform sexual acts on both Trump and Epstein.

However, it should be noted that Doe’s case against Trump was rife with problems from its inception. After dropping the third iteration of her lawsuit following Trump’s election, the left-leaning Vox.comdescribed it as “the end of an incredibly strange case that featured an anonymous plaintiff who had refused almost all requests for interviews, two anonymous corroborating witnesses whom no one in the press had spoken to, and a couple of seriously shady characters — with an anti-Trump agenda and a penchant for drama — who had aggressively shopped the story around to media outlets for over a year.”

O’Brien even went on to claim that the friendship between the two men was a major cause for concern during the 2016 election. The claim never went anywhere in court, though.

“There’s a lot of similarities to how these two men approached the world. And it is not credible that the president didn’t have a close relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, and they were worried about it up until Election Day.”

NEW YORK (AP) — A few cells away from drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman at a New York City jail, jet-setting financier Jeffrey Epstein sits accused of running a different kind of criminal network.

There was the team of recruiters and enablers bringing Epstein dozens of underage girls to sexually abuse, federal prosecutors allege.

There was the assistant who scheduled those encounters, and the butler who cleaned up afterward and doled out cash and gifts to the girls, authorities contend in court records.

There were the mansions in New York and Florida, the sprawling ranch in New Mexico and the private island in the Caribbean that kept prying eyes at a distance, and the forms his employees had to sign swearing they wouldn’t speak about him publicly.

All of it served to insulate Epstein with layer upon layer of secretiveness, investigators say, like a kingpin. And, as eventually happened to Guzman, all of it could be on the verge of collapsing inward on him.

The linchpin of the operation described in the federal indictment against Epstein were the recruiters — some of them victims themselves — who targeted girls as young as 13. Epstein deemed his team so essential that he attempted to shield several of them from federal charges under the same nonprosecution agreement that allowed him to avoid a lengthy federal prison sentence and plead guilty in 2008 to lesser state charges in Florida.

That unusual deal , initially filed in secret, went as far as to bar the federal government from charging “any potential co-conspirators of Epstein.”

That agreement could be upended by the indictment unsealed in New York federal court this month that charges Epstein with conspiracy and sex trafficking, which could see the 66-year-old sentenced to up to 45 years in prison if convicted.

Geoffrey Berman, the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, declined to say whether any of Epstein’s associates will be charged. He also would not say whether they are cooperating with the investigation.

Epstein’s lawyers did not respond to several messages seeking comment. In court last week, they attacked the federal indictment in New York as a collection of warmed-over allegations that should be moot based on Epstein’s deal with the U.S. attorney’s office in Miami.

Epstein has pleaded not guilty and is due in court Monday for a bail hearing. Prosecutors want him jailed pending trial, arguing that he is a flight risk and could attempt to influence witnesses. They said Friday that Epstein sent $350,000 recently to two individuals, including a former employee, after the Miami Herald started publishing articles about the Florida plea agreement.

Epstein’s New York indictment refers to unnamed employees who prosecutors say played a critical role in Epstein’s alleged crimes in the early 2000s and received payments to arrange massages that led to sex acts, with girls who then sometimes would be paid to find others like themselves.

“Through these victim recruiters, Epstein gained access to and was able to abuse dozens of additional minor girls,” the indictment states.

Epstein invited some of his victims to fly aboard his private jet, and lured others through an associate who ran a modeling agency, according to hundreds of pages of police reports, FBI records and court documents.

His recruiters generally sought out economically disadvantaged girls from poorer Palm Beach County neighborhoods far from the tony beachfront community where he lived, according to police reports and lawsuits filed in the wake of the nonprosecution agreement. The indictment said the victims were “often particularly vulnerable to exploitation.”

Epstein’s former girlfriend, British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, was described in accuser Sarah Ransome’s 2017 lawsuit as the “highest-ranking employee” of Epstein’s alleged sex-trafficking enterprise. She oversaw and trained recruiters, developed recruiting plans and helped conceal the activity from law enforcement, Ransome alleged.

Jennifer Araoz, a new accuser who alleged last week that Epstein raped her in New York when she was 15, said her encounters with Epstein began when a friendly young woman approached her outside her Manhattan performing-arts high school in 2001. The unidentified woman told Araoz — then 14 — that Epstein wanted to meet her and could help her achieve her dreams of becoming an actress.

“I feel like it was really well thought-out to really make me feel as comfortable as possible, to almost keep me coming back,” Araoz said in an interview on NBC’s “Today.”

Epstein’s personal assistant, Sarah Kellen, would call ahead to recruiters in Florida when Epstein was planning a trip to Palm Beach, the police reports say. Kellen, who Ransome said also recruited girls and made travel arrangements for them, “maintained Epstein’s sex schedule in order to ensure that he was not without the sexual favors of young females for any extended period of time,” according to Ransome’s lawsuit.

One of Epstein’s recruiters, Haley Robson, received $200 payments each time she escorted a new “masseuse” to Epstein’s home, according to a 2008 lawsuit filed anonymously by an accuser who said she was 14 when the abuse started. Robson targeted girls from the rural area where she grew up, several accusers have alleged in lawsuits, because Epstein perceived them to be less likely to tell authorities.

In an interview with police, Robson likened herself to the so-called Hollywood madam, Heidi Fleiss, and said Epstein once admonished her for bringing a 23-year-old recruit to his home.

“He told her the younger the better,” a detective wrote in a Palm Beach Police Department report.

The Associated Press left phone and email messages seeking comment last week from attorneys for Maxwell, Kellen and Robson; none of those messages was returned. In older court filings, Maxwell’s lawyers have denied she took part in sex trafficking.

Alfredo Rodriguez, who worked as a butler and chauffeur and managed the Palm Beach residence, told detectives he was like a “human ATM machine” and had been told to maintain a minimum balance of $2,000 cash at all times to pay the girls.

Rodriguez routinely wiped down Epstein’s sex toys following the visits, according to a Palm Beach police report. He said he provided iPods, jewelry and other gifts to the girls, a detective stated in the report, and once delivered a dozen roses to an Epstein victim at Royal Palm Beach High School.

Rodriguez, who has since died, told Palm Beach police that Epstein’s visitors appeared “too young to be masseuses,” adding they even ate like high schoolers: “Rodriguez stated they would eat tons of cereal and drink milk all the time.”

Rodriguez later pleaded guilty to withholding from federal authorities a bound book of Epstein contacts that he referred to as “the Holy Grail” and tried to sell for $10,000.

In her 2017 lawsuit, which was settled in 2018, Ransome alleged that while under investigation in the Florida case, Epstein changed tactics but kept abusing girls. Instead of targeting high school girls in the Palm Beach area, Ransome contended, he transported young females from other parts of the U.S. and abroad to his Manhattan mansion and private island in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Epstein required subordinates to sign confidentiality agreements and discouraged victims from speaking to law enforcement officials. If contacted by law enforcement, employees were to notify Epstein’s lawyers and accept representation from lawyers paid by Epstein.

To actress and model Alicia Arden, who accused Epstein of groping her during a 1997 meeting ostensibly about a potential modeling gig, the new charges show he kept “doing the same thing … having these recruiters, and people are setting things up for him.”

The Associated Press generally does not name people who say they have been sexually assaulted, unless they agree to be identified, as Araoz, Arden and Ransome have done.

Arden told The Associated Press in an interview Friday that she was 27 when Epstein’s secretary called to set up a meeting at a hotel where he was staying in Santa Monica, California. She was stunned when Epstein, while evaluating her physique, groped her buttocks and said, “Let me manhandle you,” according to a 1997 police report of her complaint.

She went to the police the next day and filed a complaint the next week, the report shows. She says she never heard further about it. The AP sent an inquiry Friday to the Santa Monica Police Department about how the case was handled. Epstein’s lawyers have said the allegations were discounted.

“I’m very distraught about what’s going on, now that I hear about these teenage girls,” Arden said, when it “could have been stopped.”

Jeffrey Epstein Sex Trafficking Scandal Is Likely Even More Worse than We Know

Making the click-through worthwhile: Seven-to-ten burning questions about the ever-worsening Jeffrey Epstein scandal, why Democrats have convinced themselves that they have yet another Great Southern Hope, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez emphasizes how heavy her committee workload is.

Burning Questions about the Jeffrey Epstein Scandal

Even by the standards of stomach-turning celebrity criminal scandals, the bits of information about multi-millionare Jeffrey Epstein and allegations of an underage sex-trafficking ring are utterly bizarre, pointing to something perhaps even bigger and worse going on. Just the reports out this morning prompt at least ten big questions.

One: How did Jeffrey Epstein make his fortune in the first place? One claim is a massive Ponzi scheme.

Two: Could Epstein really have been connected to some sort of intelligence service? In yesterday’s press conference, labor secretary Alex Acosta offered a weird, vague, contradictory, meandering answer when asked about this. If Epstein was working for some sort of spy agency, which one? What was the aim, to collect blackmail on prominent figures? Who was being blackmailed, and what did they do?

Labor Secretary Alex Acosta has been under fire in recent days for his involvement in a secret 2008 plea deal for wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was recently hit with new charges for alleged sex trafficking crimes. Acosta said he would resign from the Cabinet position he held since 2017 just days after Epstein’s indictment.

A handful of top lawmakers, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, had demanded Acosta to resign before he officially made the announcement on July 12.

“.@SecretaryAcosta must step down. As US Attorney, he engaged in an unconscionable agreement w/ Jeffrey Epstein kept secret from courageous, young victims preventing them from seeking justice. This was known by @POTUS when he appointed him to the cabinet. #AcostaResign,” Pelosi previously tweeted.

JEFFREY EPSTEIN’S PRIVATE ‘ISLAND OF SIN’ AND SEX DOLLS: 5 WEIRD DETAILS TO KNOW

President Trump called Acosta a “great” labor secretary and claimed he didn’t influence the 50-year-old’s decision in any way.

“I hate to see this happen,” said Trump, who said days prior the White House would review Acosta’s handling of the 2008 decision “very closely.”

Though he continued to defend his handling of Epstein’s 2008 case, Acosta said he didn’t want the past to distract from his work as labor secretary.

LABOR SECRETARY ACOSTA DEFENDS ROLE IN EPSTEIN PLEA DEAL, FAULTS STATE PROSECUTORS

“We have an amazing economy and the focus needs to be on the economy job creation,” said Acosta on July 12 as he stood alongside Trump at the White House.

Acosta is joining a growing list of notable officials who have departed the Trump administration over the years. As news of his resignation dominates headlines, here’s a look at how he’s connected to the Epstein scandal.

What’s Acosta’s connection to Epstein’s 2008 plea deal?

In 2008, Epstein was facing a federal sex abuse investigation (a 53-page federal indictment) involving at least 40 teenage girls that could have landed him behind bars for life.

At the time, Acosta — then serving as U.S. attorney in Miami — helped Epstein secure an 18-month plea deal. Epstein avoided federal charges by pleading guilty to state charges and served 13 months in jail, paid settlements to victims and registered as a sex offender.

The deal, which many called “lenient,” first came under scrutiny after the Miami Herald published a lengthy feature piece about what it dubbed the “deal of a lifetime” in November 2018.

According to the Miami Herald, Acosta agreed the non-prosecution deal would be kept sealed, meaning the alleged victims wouldn’t know the details of the agreement.

Acosta recently said taking Epstein’s 2008 case to trail back then would have been a “roll of the dice” scenario, per the Miami Herald.

How has Acosta responded to criticism over the 2008 agreement?

Acosta had attempted to clear his name and even held a news conference in early July to defend his actions.

“Simply put, the Palm Beach state attorney’s office was ready to let Epstein walk free, no jail time,” he said, insisting he wanted to see Epstein serve time in prison. “Prosecutors in my former office found this to be completely unacceptable.”

Pressed on whether he had any regrets, Acosta repeatedly suggested that circumstances had changed since then.

“We now have 12 years of knowledge and hindsight and we live in a very different world,” he said. “Today’s world treats victims very, very differently,” he said.

However, Barry Krischer — the Palm Beach County state attorney at the time — claimed Acosta’s recollection was “completely wrong.”

“If Mr. Acosta was truly concerned with the State’s case and felt he had to rescue the matter, he would have moved forward with the 53-page indictment that his own office drafted,” Krische said.

After federal attorneys in New York announced the new charges against Epstein, Acosta tweeted that he was “pleased” by their decision.

“The crimes committed by Epstein are horrific,” Acosta tweeted. “With the evidence available more than a decade ago, federal prosecutors insisted that Epstein go to jail, register as a sex offender and put the world on notice that he was a sexual predator.”

“Now that new evidence and additional testimony is available, the NY prosecution offers an important opportunity to more fully bring him to justice,” he said.

Fox News’ Adam Shaw and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

This will be remembered forever.

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic combined for one of the greatest men’s finals in Wimbledon history in a 4 hour, 55 minute marathon that left both players spent following the first final set tiebreak in tournament history. Djokovic is your Wimbledon champion, and for a while it felt like we would never see a winner.

A first set tiebreak served as an early warning that Djokovic and Federer were going to be locked in a close match on a Sunny afternoon. The match earned its legendary billing entering the fifth set with both sides locked at two sets a piece. This quickly gave way into a battle to separate, with neither player finding a way to get a two-game advantage and win the championship.

Weather conditions were perfect for the final, but it mattered little as both players reached for towels in between points as the all-time in a desperate attempt to keep themselves cool as the match continued to become more and more intense. The crowd was decidedly behind Federer, swelling on every point and review — trying to will the 37-year-old to a win.

Late in the fifth set it appeared as if Djokovic was losing his cool during the marathon., especially while up 12-11 in the fifth set. Following a near miss the world No. 1 smashed his racket next to the chair of umpire Damian Steiner, earning a warning. It appeared as if the pressure of the situation had become too much. It was almost as if Djokovic channeled his anger into power, bombarding Federer with increasingly aggressive shots, wearing down Federer who was leaning more into a finesse game in the difficult conditions.

A relieved Federer spoke to the crowd following the match saying his kids would have preferred him to bring home the title, but joked about being relieved the match was finally over, saying it was time for him to have a rest. Djokovic was jubilant in his win, but acknowledged how grueling it was.

“This was definitely one of the most exciting matches I was a part of. One of those matches where you never know which point will change the flow […] I managed to find my best tennis when it mattered the most.”

This was truly one of the greatest matches in Wimbledon history, and a final that will be remembered forever.

A reformed homophobe told all of Reddit how a coworker turned him into a card-carrying gay ally, and commenters are raving about the “amazing,” “wonderful,” and “beautiful” story.

The user started off by confessing that he was a “vocal and hateful gay basher” in his teen years. “I didn’t know just how many of my close friends were gay because, let’s face it, people who think they’re smart tend to be somewhat out of touch until life gives them an attitude adjustment,” he wrote.

Related: Reddit users offer their best comebacks for someone who uses ‘gay’ as a pejorative

His homophobic views started to turn around once he started working an office job and was seated at a partner desk with Randy, the “first openly gay and proud man” he’d ever met. “He made no apologies for who he was, at a point in time where the HIV and AIDS crisis had produced many asshole opinions just like mine,” he explained.

“The day Randy started his job I made my position about homosexuality horrifically, rudely clear,” the Redditor added. “He smiled, and with a politeness that I never deserved, said that he was sorry that I let his homosexuality bother me. But that it wasn’t going to get in the way of us getting good solid work done together.”

And how! Not only did Randy excel at his job, he performed even better than the Redditor, though Randy never acted superior. “From the bottom of his heart, if Randy could help another person out, that was what he wanted to do,” the Redditor remembered. “I became better at my job because of him.”

Related: We may not be looking for hetero heroes, but we still need straight allies

“And of course, I also came to realize that Randy was the kindest, most decent human being I had ever met,” he added. “I came to respect him as both a coworker and a friend. And through him I came to realize that it takes a truly lost person to hate someone because of who they love. Randy could have brushed me aside as just another bigoted homophobe, because that’s it’s exactly what I was. But he didn’t. Neither did Randy set out to make me a better person or change my mind. Randy chose to be who he was, no matter what, when it seemed like the whole world, especially his officemate, was against him.”

“He didn’t choose to change my way of thinking; my way of thinking simply could not stand up to the powerful decency of this man.”

In the end, Randy won, the Redditor wrote. “He won in being the best man he knew how to be, and he won in allowing others to accept it, or not, with no anger and no apologies. When the day finally came that I moved on to another company, I hugged Randy to say goodbye, and I cried because I knew I was going to miss my friend. We kept in touch for years, but we’ve lost touch now. I’m a boring 50-something hetero husband and father who has a great understanding of the value of my coworkers and my fellow man now. I have a daughter who’s a proud member of the LGBT+ community, and I’m the first to show off her girlfriend to my family and friends.”
