The Boston Bruins are betting favorites for Thursday night on the NHL odds as they host the St. Louis Blues for Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final.

The Boston Bruins are 5-1 in their last six games coming off a loss. After suffering a 4-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues in Game 4, the Bruins will try to take back their series lead when they host St. Louis on Thursday night.

Boston is a -155 home favorite on the NHL odds in Game 5 at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The Blues hope to take their first lead of the series with a win as +135 road underdogs.

Where: TD Garden, Boston, Massachusetts

Betting Line / Total: Boston -155 / 5.5 Goals

Blues at Bruins OddsShark Matchup Report

Boston Bruins Betting Notes

Coming off a 7-2 win in Game 3, it looked as though Boston had taken firm control of the series and might return home in Game 5 with a chance to close out the series. Instead, the Blues fought back and dealt the Bruins a 4-2 loss in Game 4, tying this series back up at two games apiece.

While Tuukka Rask has played well in the finals with a 2.48 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage, he has given up at least two goals in every game and has not had the air of invincibility in this series that he had in the previous two.

Boston is 19-6 on the moneyline in its last 25 games at home per the OddsShark NHL Database.

St. Louis Blues Betting Notes

For the second straight time in this series, the Blues shook off a disappointing loss with a fantastic effort, improving to 11-2 in their last 13 games after a loss. St. Louis looked lost and was completely dominated through two periods of Game 1 and virtually all of Game 3.

In Games 2 and 4 however, the Blues have totally controlled the tempo and outshot the Bruins 74-43. Can that version of the team show up on Thursday night without a loss preceding it?

Blues at Bruins Betting Total

Thursday night’s total is set at 5.5 goals at online betting sites. The OVER is 4-1 in Boston’s last five home games.

If we’ve learned one thing in this series it’s that momentum doesn’t matter much to these two teams. It will be interesting to see if Game 5 continues the trend of one team controlling the action for most of the night or if this will be the first time in the series that both teams are at their best. Either way, it should be another great game to watch.

We took a look at the quotes Roger Federer gave after each of his five French Open losses to Rafael Nadal in advance of their semifinal meeting on Friday.

On Friday, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will face off in the semifinals of the French Open. It will be their sixth meeting on the clay of Roland Garros, and their first since 2011. Nadal’s dominance on clay played a huge part of the duo’s early rivalry, with the French Open being Federer’s elusive title until he finally won it in 2009, when someone else eliminated the King of Clay.

Federer still sits at one French Open title, while possessing 19 Grand Slam titles from the other three combined. He doesn’t need another one to cement his legacy as perhaps the greatest to ever play the men’s game, but obviously he’d love to have it.

But beating Nadal on clay is something Federer has only done twice, and never at Roland Garros. They aren’t meeting in the finals this time around, because they were drawn into the same half of the bracket. But the stakes are just about as high in the semifinal.

When Nadal first beat Federer in the French Open final in 2006, it shocked a lot of people. When he did it again a year later, people were openly talking about Federer never getting the coveted Coupe des Mousquetaires. But what was Federer feeling at the time? Let’s go over what Federer had to say every time he lost to Nadal at the French Open

2005: Nadal beats Federer in the semifinals, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3

This is where it all began. Federer showed some serious flashes in this semifinal, but ultimately was overpowered by Nadal and had little to offer him in the fourth and final set. Federer was still pretty positive at this point, not too worried. He probably felt he had what it takes to beat Nadal, eventually.

“I was bad at the start, good in the middle, and bad at the end. I’m disappointed but I’m not going to trash the locker room. My desire to win here is still massive. I thought I had the keys to beat him but I wasn’t at my best.”

2006: Nadal beats Roger Federer in the final, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4, 7-6(7-4)

The idea of Roger Federer “missing an opportunity” in 2006 is still kind of ridiculous, especially given his level of play that he still maintains today. Federer himself talked about how he would probably hear about this particular loss for years to come.

“I tried, and I cannot do any more than that. Obviously it’s a pity, but life goes on. I’ll probably hear for years that I missed my opportunity, but I have no choice but to accept it. It is still my goal to win here, and once again I got one step closer. Unfortunately on this occasion I did not play the match I wanted to or hoped.”

2007: Nadal beats Federer in the final, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4

When Federer lost to Nadal for the third consecutive year, and the second in the final, he was oddly positive about his chances of winning it eventually. He was clearly bummed out, even crestfallen, but he still talked about things as though it were a certainty he’d eventually get there.

“Well, you can put it any way you want. All I know, at the end of the day, is that I’m disappointed today, and I don’t care less about the way I’ve played over the last 10 months or 10 years. I wanted to win this match, and I didn’t succeed. So, of course, it’s a bit sad. If I would have won today, I would have not many other goals to chase in my career. Eventually, if I get it, the sweeter it’s going to taste. So hopefully I’ll give myself more opportunities, over and over again. I know I can do it now, that’s for sure.”

2008: Nadal beats Federer in the final, 6-1, 6-3, 6-0

This is where Federer seemed to be at his lowest. He was quiet, reserved, almost sheepish in his post-match interview. He seemed embarrassed, even, that he had only managed to win four games in what was an absolute rout. He hadn’t dropped a set at 0-6 since 1999. He had nothing for Nadal that day. Fortunately, his own French Open title would come a year later.

“I would have hoped, of course, to get more today than four games. But Rafa is really very, very strong this year. He dominated this tournament like perhaps never before. Like Bjorn. He deserves this title. It was still a good week. Losing in a final is never easy but I will try again next year. He dominated from the first point until the end. It’s the strongest Rafa that I’ve ever seen. He was more dominant than the previous years.”

2011: Nadal beats Federer in the final, 7-5, 7-6(7-3), 5-7, 6-1

Two years after Federer earned his first and only French Open title, he was in the midst of a strong bid for a second when he ran into Nadal once again. This time, it was a much closer match than the previous couple, and Federer really pushed the Spaniard. But he still came up short in their final French Open meeting until this coming Friday.

And you’ll see that Federer keeps referring to “today” as a concept, because he always believes that there’s another day where he can get the win. But he also is more complimentary, probably because he already had a title at this point.

“I thought he was getting tired in the third and fourth sets but unfortunately I couldn’t take advantage of it. At 0-0 in the fourth set you think we have a match again. We know what can happen in tennis. In the fifth set I would have felt very, very strong. But Rafa played well and he deserved to win today. He plays better against the better ones, and that’s what he showed today. He’s a great champion, on clay, especially.”

And what does Nadal think, going into their first meeting at the French Open since 2011 (and also Federer’s first appearance in the Roland Garros semifinals since 2012)?

“Having Roger in front in the semi-finals is an extra thing. We shared the most important moments of our careers together on court facing each other.

”So it is another episode of this, and I’m happy for that and excited. It will be a special moment.”

State Department Program Targeting Critics of Trump’s Iran Policy Draws Congressional Scrutiny – Mother Jones

House Democrats are investigating the State Department’s use of a program that was originally put in place to counter Russian propaganda and terrorist disinformation to fund criticism of opponents of President Donald Trump’s policy on Iran.

News broke last week that the Global Engagement Center—a small office in the State Department tasked with combating foreign propaganda—had provided funding to the Iran Disinformation Project, an anonymous website and Twitter account that has been accused of harassing journalists, academics, and human rights activists who question Trump’s aggressive posture toward Iran. On Friday, the State Department announced that it was suspending funding for the project until whoever is behind it “takes necessary steps to ensure that any future activity remains within the agreed scope of work.” According to the Guardian, many of the tweets were deleted that day.

But the controversy has drawn scrutiny from Democrats in Congress. House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) this week requested that Global Engagement Center officials brief committee staff on the agency’s grant spending, a committee aide told Mother Jones. Officials from the center have agreed to meet with staffers next Monday, the aide said. Rep. Ami Bera (D-Calif.), who chairs a Foreign Affairs Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, is also looking into the issue, a Bera spokesman said.

Democratic lawmakers are concerned that the Trump White House repurposed an office set up to combat foreign propaganda and online extremism to support allies of its hawkish stance on Iran. In February, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo named Lea Gabrielle, a former Fox News journalist—who had little diplomatic experience—to run the Global Engagement Center.

The center’s apparent shift in focus came as the Trump administration escalated its confrontation with Iran. Last year, Trump pulled out of a nuclear deal with Iran signed by former President Barack Obama. Iran and European signatories say they continue to abide by the agreement, but Trump has since slapped new sanctions on Iran and has denounced the country with bellicose rhetoric. Pompeo has demanded that Tehran agree to a long list of demands, including an end to peaceful nuclear power efforts, withdrawal of its forces from Syria, and an end to support for groups including Hezbollah and Hamas.

Brett Bruen, who was director of Global Engagement at the White House under Obama, said that under Pompeo, the repurposing of the agency was clear. “They made a decision to spend the money to align with the political agenda of the administration, rather than what it was intended to do, which was to protect Americans and our allies from disinformation,” Bruen said.

The center was established in 2016 by Obama to “counter the messaging and diminish the influence of international terrorist organizations.” Bruen said the center won $80 million from Congress in 2016 also to combat disinformation from Russia and other states. He argued the Trump administration was uninterested in that mission, slashing funding for the center, before late last year hastily allocating about $20 million for other purposes. “It’s unclear if they were given orders to ignore Russia,” he said. “But they certainly have prioritized Iran.”

The State Department did not respond to questions about the center’s grants. Bruen said he believed the Iran Disinformation Project received a grant worth “tens of thousands” of dollars, a small piece of the millions the center doled out to support hawkish voices on Iran. Its Twitter account, @IranDisinfo, drew notice for attacking Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian, who spent a year and half in prison in Iran; BBC reporters; Human Rights Watch, and especially the National Iranian American Council, a group that describes itself as a nonpartisan organization of Americans with Iranian heritage who support diplomacy with Iran. The account suggested these critics of current US policy were apologists or secret advocates for the Iranian government.

Jamal Abdi, the president of the NIAC, said in an interview that the account’s attacks were part of a broader “astroturf campaign” by Iran hawks to demonize his groups. Abdi said he hopes Congress will determine if “any member of the Trump Administration or U.S. government agency has been involved in guiding, coordinating, or encouraging attacks and propaganda against critics or political opponents of the Trump Administration.”
