Donald Trump on Thursday night tweeted out a video of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi doctored to make it appear she is stammering her words. The video is part of a false information campaign of doctored Pelosi videos that flooded social media on Thursday. Even FOX News debunked the videos.

This is our very desperate President of the United States:

Treason necessarily involves an active state of war — among many other problems with Trump’s rhetoric.

Palmer Report: Nancy Pelosi slam dunks Donald Trump after he has another meltdown about being a “stable genius”

When Donald Trump’s behavior became so erratic last year that the public began loudly questioning his mental health and cognitive abilities, he preposterously declared that he’s a “very stable genius.” One year and one thousand punchlines later, Trump is now behaving more mentally incompetent than ever, prompting Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to declare this morning that Trump is “unwell” and that he should consider taking a “leave of absence.”

Donald Trump responded just now by speaking to a group of reporters and declaring that he’s an “extremely stable genius.” No, this isn’t some outdated headline. He really did say it again today. Except this time he’s gone from being “very stable” to being “extremely stable” – as if that extra bit of hyperbole is going to convince the public that he’s mentally competent after all. Trump also claimed that Nancy Pelosi is a “mess,” which isn’t exactly the most creative of insults.

Nancy Pelosi fired back on Twitter, stating that “When the ‘extremely stable genius’ starts acting more presidential, I’ll be happy to work with him on infrastructure, trade and other issues.” It’s clear that Pelosi is fine with getting into an escalating war of words with Donald Trump. That kind of thing usually drives down both people’s approval ratings. But Pelosi ostensibly doesn’t care about her own approval rating, and she knows that the majority of Americans are going to side with her anyway.

The point of goading Donald Trump like this, of course, is to get him to speak and behave in such a dangerously insane manner that even the average nonpolitical person sitting at home ends up concluding that he’s got to go. Nancy Pelosi appears to be aiming much higher than merely impeaching Trump right now, which would weaken but not oust him; she seems intent on finding a way to actually oust him.

GLAAD on Thursday denounced the Trump campaign for selling a $24 LGBTQ Pride t-shirt on its website.

Writes GLAAD: “As LGBTQ Americans are preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Pride Month and the historic Stonewall riots, President Trump and his 2020 presidential campaign started selling an ‘LGBTQ for Trump’ t-shirt on their website. The problem – the Trump Administration is the most anti-LGBTQ in recent memory, issuing more than 108 attacks on LGBTQ Americans, in policy and rhetoric, since taking office – with one attack coming just yesterday. In fact, theTrump has yet to issue a statement honoring June as National Pride Month since the start of his administration.”

Said GLAAD’s Chief Programs Officer Zeke Stokes: “Trump should hold the sales pitch and try issuing a statement honoring June as National Pride Month and the countless of LGBTQ Americans who fought tooth and nail for the level of acceptance our nation sees today.”

The video of Klay Thompson’s reaction says it all. There was a lot at stake for marquee free agents this year.

The NBA announced their All-NBA teams, which have major implications beyond the flattering honor alone. The designation impacts how much money a team can offer its own free agents, gives smaller-market franchises better odds at warding off big-city teams from poaching their talent, and offers the opportunity of a lifetime for players to make an even more life-changing amount of money.

Here’s how those teams panned out:

First Team All-NBA

C- Nikola Jokic
F- Giannis Antetokounmpo
F- Paul George
G- James Harden
G- Stephen Curry

Second Team All-NBA

C- Joel Embiid
F- Kevin Durant
F- Kawhi Leonard
G- Kyrie Irving
G- Damian Lillard

Third Team All-NBA

C- Rudy Gobert
F- Blake Griffin
F- LeBron James
G- Russell Westbrook
G- Kemba Walker

Why is the All-NBA team so important?

Because it directly impacts how much money a team can offer to re-sign their own marquee free agent.

The super max — or in collective bargaining agreement jargon: The Designated Player Max Extension — allows teams to retain free agents who have been on their team for 7-to-9 years by offering a contract of five years worth 35 percent of the salary cap. This summer, the super max will be worth $221.2 million.

Call it a quarter-billy if you like.

But teams can only offer that contract if the player meets certain criteria:

  • he was named the Defensive Player of the Year in the most recent season, or both of the two seasons that preceded the most recent season.
  • he was named the NBA Most Valuable Player in any of the three most recent seasons.
  • he was named to the All-NBA First, Second or Third team in the most recent season, or both of the two seasons that preceded the most recent season.

This is why making an All-NBA team is vital, for both player and franchise.

For the player, it gives an extra year of stability and unrivaled financial security. For the franchise, particularly those in smaller markets, it gives a leg up against big-city competition. It’s tough to turn down a fifth year on a contract when it’s worth $TK more than any other team can offer. Anthony Davis will be the first to turn the super max down if he forces a trade from New Orleans or chooses to leave in free agency next summer.

Winners: Kemba Walker, Charlotte Hornets

Walker had a sensational season in Charlotte, posting career-highs across the board. He becomes a free agent this summer, and Walker told me while he loves the franchise that drafted him dearly, his top priority this summer is winning — in Charlotte or elsewhere.

He also said money isn’t the deciding factor in his free agency, but we spoke before he made the All-NBA Team, which made him eligible for a five-year, $221 million deal. We’ll find out if that’s true if the Hornets come with the super max.

Charlotte’s payroll, though, is absolutely disgusting. They weren’t even able to pull off a deal for Marc Gasol at the trade deadline, a move that could have been the difference between them sneaking into the playoffs and missing it altogether.

An argument can be made Charlotte would be better off allowing Walker to leave, thus ushering in a full rebuild rather than wallowing in mediocrity with one star Hornets management doesn’t have assets to build around. But this is a love affair between city, franchise and franchise player. If the Hornets offer Walker the super max, it would be tough for him to turn it down.

Loser: Klay Thompson

Here’s Thompson’s almost visceral reaction when he found out he’d missed out on the All-NBA teams.

Thompson becomes a free agent this summer, and he is not eligible for a super max contract because voters deemed Harden, Curry, Lillard, Irving, Westbrook and Walker as more deserving of All-NBA nods. Maybe there shouldn’t be positions on All-NBA ballots? Or maybe All-NBA ballots and super max contract money shouldn’t be forever tethered to media voting. You can bet the NBPA will raise this issue at the bargaining table in the future.

The best the Warriors can offer Thompson to build a future around the Splash Brothers in the post Kevin Durant era is a five-year deal worth $189 million. Opposing teams can offer four years worth $140.6. This provides a small plot twist for the Warriors, who will have to ward off other suitors for Thompson in free agency. Odds are he stays anyway. $189 million is nothing to laugh at. Neither are four NBA championships, which is on the table for the Warriors this season.

Winner: Damian Lillard, Portland Trail Blazers

The Trail Blazers are already in negotiations with Lillard on inking a four-year, $191 million extension that doesn’t kick in until 2021. This is a win for both teams. The Trail Blazers need Lillard, and Lillard deserves that ridiculous chunk of change

Loser: Washington Wizards

With John Wall projected to be out all of next season, the Wizards were banking on the potential to offer Bradley Beal life-changing money. Beal still has two years left on his contract but making All-NBA this season would have made him eligible for a super max extension that would have kicked in in 2021.

The Wizards still have time. They can hope Beal makes an All-NBA Team, wins MVP or Defensive Player of the Year in one of the next two seasons. But the clock is ticking to put something promising around their new franchise player. Otherwise, they’ll be met with the harsh reality of choosing between trading Beal, or losing him for nothing.

Winner: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks

To be fair, if Antetokounmpo doesn’t win league MVP this season, he’s probably going to win it next season or the year after. But this is his third All-NBA Team nod in the past three years, so if the Bucks want to give him a super max extension now, they can offer it, and it would make him the owner of the largest contract in NBA history.

Loser: Draymond Green

Green has made two All-NBA teams (2016 2nd-Team, 2017 3rd Team) in his career, but the super max criteria calls for an All-NBA nod in either “the most recent season, or both of the two seasons that preceded the most recent season.”

Green becomes a free agent not this summer, but next. That means if the Warriors wait to offer Green a contract extension next offseason, he won’t be eligible unless he makes an All-NBA team or wins Defensive Player of the Year.

Neither are farfetched possibilities. Green is one of the most versatile players in the league, and he’s a candidate for All-NBA and DPOY every season. Making an All-NBA team this season, though, would have cemented a super max offer as a possibility when his free agency arrives. Instead, his play next season will be the deciding factor.

Winner: Rudy Gobert

Let’s it simple — my man is in position to get P-A-I-D. By paid, I mean a five-year, $247 million contract extension beginning in 2020.

Loser: Karl-Anthony Towns

Towns did not make an All-NBA Team this season’s he missed out on a $32 million incentive in his contract. 32 MILLION DOLLARS?! Because some voters didn’t pick him?

I’d be pissed.

Doesn’t matter

  • Jimmy Butler made All-NBA Teams both in 2017 and 2018. The Sixers will have to come with that super max contract if they intend to keep him in Philly
  • Kawhi Leonard lost his opportunity at a super max contract when he requested a trade from San Antonio. Designated Player Extensions are only available to players who remain on the same team
  • Kyrie Irving also lost his opportunity at a super max contract when he forced his trade from Cleveland two summers ago. He is expected to forfeit an additional $49 million if he chooses to leave the Celtics in free agency this summer

Spain and La Liga are showing the world how to support women’s soccer

Spain is out to prove that the idea that women’s sports can’t inherently succeed has always been coded nonsense.

Last weekend, Olympique Lyonnais demolished Barcelona 4-1 in the Champions League final. There was nothing unexpected about the result: I was Barcelona’s first appearance in the final of the competition, and Lyon have featured in four straight, winning all of them. It was a grand achievement for Barcelona to make it so far, and after their loss, the main Twitter account posted a video claiming that while their season might be over, a dream was just beginning:

Though that post may have seemed like a small gesture, it was significant because it was Barcelona’s main account promoting and celebrating their women’s team in a way that most clubs in the world still don’t. For the last few years, La Liga has been pushing to make their women’s football a popular and sustainable product, and Barcelona is doing their part by promoting their women’s team to as many fans as possible.

Women’s football in Spain was recognized by the Royal Spanish Football Federation in 1980, and the Liga Nacional, the highest level competition, was founded eight years later. The league was rebranded as the Primera División at the beginning of the 2010-2011 season, and in 2015, La Liga took over control of the league with the intent to make it an attractive and sustainable product.

Pedro Malabia, head of women’s football at La Liga, explained that the challenge of making league profitable doesn’t have to do with a lack of interest in the women’s game, but with building the proper foundations and then marketing:

”When in 2015 the clubs asked us to come on board, what we found was a competition without visibility, without a commercial strategy or a stable presence on television. … Our great challenge was to start a series of initiatives that would help to create a quality product— one that would attract the attention of fans, sponsors and media. Our goal was to increase the appeal of women’s football — and to professionalise its league.

“The creation of the Association of Women’s Football Clubs — which currently includes 70 women’s football clubs across the premier and second divisions — has allowed the clubs to carry out promotion strategies and work together for the growth of their sector. The entry of Iberdrola, too, as the main sponsor of the league was a key moment. It has been a main driver of the competition.”

That 2015, La Liga set its sites on professionalizing many of the teams in an ongoing effort to make sure that the players would no longer need to work on the side while playing. So that, according to Malabia, the players’ lives could be sustained by their contract so that they can focus on the sport as much as they need to reach their potential.

A big part of the league’s sustainability has come from the its sponsorship with Iberdrola. And last year, Barcelona Femení got their first main jersey sponsorship with Stanley Black & Decker.

The foundation-building for women’s football in Spain was partly helped by the successes of the women’s teams on the international stage. Spain’s women’s national team qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 2015. Then in 2018, the U-17 team won their respective World Cup while U-20s made their World Cup final. Along with the international accolades has come a cultural change surrounding women’s football, so that women playing the sport are no longer seen as an aberration.

This type of progress doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Cultural change needs active entities.

While it’s true that views have become more progressive towards women’s football, the shift has also coincided with Barcelona doing things like consistently promoting Barcelona Femení on their main account, and making the team known to fans who might have never encountered the women’s team otherwise.

Barcelona’s and La Liga’s effort to make their women’s teams as visible as possible is in stark contrast to a team like Manchester United, which has only promoted their own women’s team a handful of times since its inception a year ago. That’s not surprising, considering United’s reluctance to create the team.

It would be irresponsible to talk about the struggle to make women’s teams successful and sustainable without talking about the historical and institutional sabotages that have been perpetrated against the sport. While the men’s game has, in many places, over a century of history and promotion, women have been denied that opportunity and support. Spain is still building on four years of work after professionalizing the Primera División in 2015, and that’s with the knowledge that the highest league for women was created in 1988.

In Britain, women’s football was effectively banned at the professional levels until 1971, under the reasoning that it conflicted with femininity and shouldn’t be encouraged. The German Football Association had a similar ban until the same year. In Brazil, football was banned for women until 1979. That originated from a citizen writing to then-President Getúlio Vargas, stating that same concern about football and femininity. France, the beacon of success in women’s football, boasts the two best teams in the sport in Lyon and PSG, but also banned banned the game until 1970.

Similar bans of women’s football still exist in many other countries today. And in places where women aren’t banned outright from playing, there is an endless list of obstacles that they face: threats of violence, lack of financial support, lack of access to fields and proper training, lack of sanitary napkins and sports bras, bans on certain clothing that forces some women to choose between their religious identity and the sport that they love, wage inequality, and lack of proper promotion and institutional support.

For most of its history, women’s football has struggled to exist because of institutional sabotage based in sexism, and then had its failures reasoned as evidence of an inherent lack of interest. And that’s what makes something as simple as Barcelona tweeting about their women’s team so heartening.

And Barcelona isn’t alone. They have teamed with Atletico Madrid (winners of the last four league titles), Valencia, and other prominent La Liga sides to make the women’s game work. There seems to be a dedication to invest and support female players, without the coded presumption that there’s something unsustainable about women’s football.

If Spain succeeds in this grand plan, it could be a beacon for other countries around the world, showing them the collaborative effort needed to uplift the women’s game. Spain is not yet a success story, but it is an inspiring one. And it seems to be thriving on the most obvious but overlooked concept when it comes to women’s football: The interest is there, and if you want to capitalize on it, you have to support the game at all levels, from professionalizing the teams to promoting them as much as possible.

The American People is your ultimate Judge, and they might be understanding and forgiving about the financial transgressions caused by the necessities of business life but they will never forgive or forget the deliberate disloyalty to the country. Think about this, atone for past errors and transgressions and give a vow to the American People to investigate this affair, in all its aspects, to the depths of depths, in all its historical aspects, starting from 1930-s. We need to know the TRUTH, we have to know the truth, otherwise we are not able to understand these events correctly, and to fix them, to cure them; and we are risking to allow this affliction to go on indefinitely and to have the clearly adverse and destructive effect on the country.

Fred Karger

FRED KARGER. I was the first openly gay major-party candidate, but that was a different time, and Pete Buttigieg can win in 2020: “I know a little something about running for president. I ran in the 2012 as the very first openly gay major-party candidate. I ran in a very different party, in a very different time with a very different president in office. I made news because I was the first and because I ran as a Republican.”

WHY AMERICA’S FAT. Drumstick cereal.

JEFFERSON CITY. Massive tornado hits Missouri’s capital.

KAMALA HARRIS. On impeachment. “I believe that the process should begin to do an investigation to determine ultimately whether impeachment should happen.”

WASHINGTON D.C. Buttigieg attends fundraiser at home of gay couple: “The event was hosted by D.C. physician Jim D’Orta and his husband Jed Ross at the couple’s house, along with longtime gay Democratic activist Peter Rosenstein, who each greeted the crowd before Buttigieg spoke.”

TRUMP PRISON UPDATE. A sixth child died in U.S. custody.

DUMB AS A ROCK. Trump attacks the man he hired for Secretary of State after Tillerson tells lawmakers that Putin out-prepared Trump for meeting in Germany.

XAVIER DOLAN. On his new film Matthias and Maxime: “This film is not gay, It’s life. We never talk about heterosexual films. ‘Oh, I saw this great heterosexual love story.’ For me, it’s not a story of homosexuality or gay love. Ultimately, I don’t think that the two protagonists are aware that it is gay love. It’s love.”

DINNER DATE. Richard Madden and Brandon Flynn grab a bite.

THREE STATES. Britney’s dad extends conservatorship.

NORTH CAROLINA. Morrisville gay city councilman Jerry Windle resigns halfway through term due to bullying from colleagues: “We need to stand up for what is right and stop it at its source,” Windle said. “It truly is a cancer that is affecting our country, and until leaders stand up, it’s not going to stop.”

IMPRESSION OF THE DAY. Millie Bobbie Brown does Amy Winehouse.

MUSIC VIDEO OF THE DAY. John Roberts “Looking”. “The lyrics are pretty self-explanatory, depending on what your state-of-mind is. Everyone is looking for the same thing on the dance floor. I don’t think anyone is looking for love in the club. It was the best way to introduce this EP.”

MUSIC VIDEO II OF THE DAY. Katey Brooks “All of Me”.

THIRSTY THURSDAY. Wai Kin.
